I have just finished watching the movie “Angels and Demons” based on Dan Brown’s book “Angles & Demons”. And once again, I think that there are way too many differences between the original book and the movie. Most of the original main characters of the book, such as Father Leonardo Vetra, Maximilian Kohler, Gunther Glick and Chinita Macri from the BBC crew.

Before I even get into the details of the movie or the book let me just say this: If you have not seen the movie or read the book “Angels and Demons”, I really don’t think that you should read this post as it would spoil the intrigue of the story it for you.

Main differences between “Angels And Demons” the book and the movie:

1º) Who created the Antimatter?

Book: Leonardo Vetra and Vittoria Vetra created the Antimatter.

Movie: The staffs of CERN Creates the Antimatter.

2º)Who is the priest/scientist that gets killed at the beginning?

Book: Father Leonardo Vetra. The adoptive father of Vetra.

Movie: Father Silvano.

3º) Who finds the body the dead priest/scientist?

Book: Maximilian Kohler, director of CERN.

Movie: Vittoria Vetra.

4º) Who first contact Robert Langdon?

Book: Kohler phones Robert Langdon and faxes him the Illuminati symbol.

Movie: A representative from the Vatican visits Langdon at the university.

5º)Where does Robert Langdon go first?

Book: Robert fly to the CERN in Kholer’s high tech jet to meet Vittoria.

Movie: Robert goes directly to the Vatican.

6º) How many preferit died?

Book: All 4 Preferiti that were kidnapped died.

Movie: Only 3 preferiti died. Cardinal Baggia is saved by Langdon.

7º) how  does the hassassin dies?

Book: The Hassasin was pushed over a balcony by Langdon and Vittoria.
Movie: The Hassasin is killed in the explosion of his car.

8º) Who finds out who the mastermind is first?

Book: Kholer, while reading Leaonardo Vetra  journal’s. He then flys to the Vatican to tell Commander Rocher.

Movie: Commander Rocher, after stealing Sylviano’s journal from Vittoria.

9º)Who get shot by the Swiss guards in the papol office?

Book: Kholer and Commander Rocher both get killed by the Swiss guards.

Movie: Commander Kholer and someone called Father Simone.

10º) What leads langdon to the mastermind?

Book: Before Kholer dies, he gives a videotape to Langdon.

Movie: As Rocher dies, Langdon finds a golden key in his hands.

11º) Who takes off in the helicopter?

Book: both, Robert Langdon and the Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca.

Movie: Only Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca

12º) How does the Camerlengo Dies?

Book: He set himself on fire on front of the whole crowd in St Peter Square.

Movie: He set himself on fire inside the Vatican where only the Swiss guards can seen him.

13º) Who becomes the new Pope?

Book: First, the Camerlengo is officially elected as the new pope, then only after the plot is actually revealed, Cardinal Mortati (who leads the Papal election) become the new pope.

Movie: Cardinal Baggia of Italy – The fourth preferiti saved by Langdon.

14º)What’s with Robert langdon and Vittoria Vetra?

Book: Robert and Vittoria become lovers in the end.
Movie: Nothing.

There are many other differences, such as the fact the it is never told in the movie that the Camerlengo was the actual son of the last pope. It’s only briefly mentioned that the pope “adopted” him as a child, or that the conflict between religion and science was a main part of the book but barely get mentioned in the movie.

My personal opinion:

As a movie and it’s own, “Angels & Demons” is a very good movie. Fast paced and packed with intrigues, but if you are a fan of the original book, like myself, you may be disappointed by how much of the original story was lost or changed by the movie.
